🪶 The Watcher of the Pier
Every evening, just before the sun dipped behind the mountains, the pelican returned to his post. Locals called him Captain. Not because he sailed, but because he kept watch always from the same weathered wooden post at the edge of the pier.
Sailors swore he could predict the tides. Children believed he guarded the boats. And old men, sipping coffee from chipped mugs, said he had seen more sunsets than any soul in town.
Captain had no crew, no nest, no mate. Just the sea, the sky, and the rhythm of the waves. He arrived with the light and left with the stars.
One evening, a boy named Leo wandered down the pier, clutching a sketchbook. He had drawn the pelican before, but never dared to sit close. This time, he did.
Captain didn’t move. He turned his head, one eye on the horizon, one on the boy.
Leo sketched in silence. The pelican’s feathers, the curve of his beak, the way the sunset painted gold across his wings. When he finished, he held up the drawing.
Captain blinked once, then lifted his wings and took flight, gliding into the orange sky.
Leo watched until the bird became a silhouette, then a speck, then nothing.
The next evening, Captain returned. And this time, he landed closer.
From then on, Leo came every night. And the pelican stayed a little longer.
Some friendships don’t need words.
