🍣 The Last Roll
The sushi platter arrived just as the rain began to tap against the windowpane. Soft jazz played overhead, barely audible over the hum of conversation and the clink of ceramic cups. Hiroshi adjusted his glasses and glanced across the table at his daughter, Emi, who was already reaching for the chopsticks.
“Wait,” he said, smiling. “Let’s toast first.”
She paused, amused. “To what?”
He poured the sake slowly, the steam curling upward like memory. “To your new job. To Tokyo. To you.”
Emi raised her cup, eyes shining. “And to you! For not trying to talk me out of it.”
They clinked cups gently. The sake was warm, mellow. Outside, the rain had turned steady, blurring the neon signs into watercolor streaks.
The platter between them was a mosaic of colors: avocado green, salmon pink, and the deep black of nori. Hiroshi picked up a roll and dipped it lightly in soy sauce. “You know,” he said, “your mother and I used to come here before you were born. Same booth.”
Emi looked around, surprised. “Really? I thought you hated sushi.”
“I pretended to. She loved it. I learned to love it too.”
They ate slowly, savoring each piece. The wasabi sat untouched in the corner, a quiet dare. Emi reached for a roll topped with shrimp and paused. “Do you think she’d be proud of me?”
Hiroshi didn’t answer right away. He looked at the empty seat beside him, then back at Emi. “She already was.”
The last roll sat between them, a simple cucumber maki. Emi pushed it toward him. “You take it.”
“No,” he said, nudging it back. “You’re the one starting something new.”
She smiled, picked it up, and ate it in one bite. “Then I guess I’ll take everything that comes next, too.”
