Japanese AI Robot Swarms To Scout The Moon
Anime & AI News

Japan’s space agency, in partnership with Chuo University and engineering firm Takenaka, is testing small AI-powered red robots designed to scout lunar sites for future moon bases. The robots, equipped with onboard computers, can autonomously navigate sandy terrain simulating the lunar surface, jump up to one meter, and share data. Their mission will be to identify optimal base locations, with scientists considering lava tubes as ideal shelters due to their natural protection against radiation and extreme temperature shifts. The robots could be deployed within five years, supporting NASA’s Artemis program. Artemis II, set for next year, will orbit the moon with four astronauts, while Artemis III aims to return humans to the lunar surface in 2027.
