The tide had just begun to retreat when Elias arrived at the cove. He always came early before the dog walkers, before the joggers, before the sun had fully committed to the day. The beach was quiet, save for the rhythmic hush of water pulling back over polished stones.

He knelt at the edge of the shallows, where the pebbles glistened like forgotten treasure. Smooth, rounded, and impossibly varied; ochre, slate, amber, even a few with flecks of quartz that caught the light like tiny stars. Elias didn’t collect them for beauty alone. Each one had a story.

He picked up a blue-gray stone, thumb tracing its cool surface. “Storm tide,” he murmured, remembering the night it had first appeared three winters ago, after the sea had raged and flung half the coastline into disarray. That stone had been buried then, half-visible, like a secret waiting to be earned.

Further down the beach, he found a pebble shaped like a teardrop. “Anna,” he said softly. She had loved this beach. They used to walk it together, naming stones like constellations. She’d called them “shore stars.” After she passed, Elias kept coming back, remembering the shiniest of moments. The beach didn’t ask questions. It just held space.

The water was clearer than usual today, glassy and still. He could see the full mosaic beneath the surface, an accidental artwork shaped by centuries of erosion and tide. Elias no longer took many stones home. He’d learned that some things were better left where they belonged.

Instead, he sat on the driftwood log and watched the reflections ripple. A gull cried overhead. The sun warmed the back of his neck. And for a moment, the world felt perfectly balanced, like the tide had paused just for him. Tomorrow, the beach would change again. But today, it was exactly as it needed to be.
