🐎 Riding through the Storm

The wind clawed at the cliffs of Mount Cragus, tearing through the cypress groves like a warning whispered by the gods. Lightning stitched the sky in jagged arcs, and the clouds above churned with unnatural fury. This was not an ordinary storm but one summoned by divine hands to test the resolve of a single man.

Pegasus flew straight through it. The winged stallion’s muscles flexed with each beat of his wings, rain streaming from his flanks, feathers slick and gleaming like hammered silver. His breath came in snorts of steam, nostrils flared against the cold. He did not fear the storm. He feared the man on his back.

Bellerophon’s armor bore the patina of age and war, bronze dulled by salt and blood, the crimson cloak behind him soaked and heavy. His spear was steady, his shield close to his chest, but his eyes betrayed him. They scanned the horizon for the Chimera, for signs of divine judgment. He had slain men. He had defied kings. And now he was sent to kill a monster born of fire and madness.

The Chimera’s lair lay high in the mountains, where the air thinned and the rocks burned from within. Iobates had not expected him to survive. The storm was proof of that. Zeus himself had loosed it, or perhaps Poseidon, his own father, testing the son he had never claimed.

Pegasus climbed higher, wings slicing through the gale. Below, the valley of Lycia shrank to a smear of green and stone. Above, the clouds broke in flashes of gold and white, revealing glimpses of the lair: a jagged outcrop glowing faintly, as if the mountain itself bled fire.

Bellerophon leaned forward, whispering not to Pegasus, but to the gods.

“I do not ask for favor,” he said. “Only that you stay aside and just watch.”

A bolt of lightning struck nearby, close enough to illuminate the bronze of his shield and the whites of Pegasus’s eyes. The stallion flinched but did not falter. Together, they pierced the storm, ascending toward the lair where the Chimera waited, lion’s head roaring, goat’s body coiled, serpent’s tail lashing.

The storm did not relent. It followed them, a divine warning made flesh. But Bellerophon did not turn back. He was steadfast, flying to confront what no man had dared. And the gods, for now, decided to watch in silence.
