Hikers Rescued After Relying on Gemini for Mount Shasta Plan
Anime & AI News

Three novice hikers from Roseville, California were rescued from Mount Shasta after relying on Google Gemini while planning their climb. Digital Trends reports that the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said the chatbot advised the group to carry much less food and water than they needed. The hikers began around 3 a.m. and continued past the recommended noon turnaround time, reaching the summit near 7 p.m. During the descent they lost the route in darkness, entered Mud Creek Canyon and spent the night in a steep drainage while one hiker dealt with a knee injury. Rescuers reached them the following morning. Authorities advised hikers to carry multiple navigation methods, including an offline option, contact local rangers before climbing and never rely solely on AI for safety-critical trip planning.
