John Oliver Warns AI Chatbots Are Built for Engagement, Not Friendship

Anime & AI News

John Oliver used Last Week Tonight to examine the risks of widely available AI chatbots, arguing that companies have strong incentives to maximise engagement before safety problems are fully solved. He highlighted sycophantic responses, weak safeguards, sexualised interactions involving minors, and cases where bots reinforced delusions or responded dangerously to users in crisis. Oliver also criticised the tendency to market chatbots as companions, noting that users can form intense parasocial attachments while the companies behind the systems profit from longer and more frequent conversations. He called for stronger guardrails and greater accountability, while urging people to treat AI companions with extreme caution. His central warning was that a chatbot may sound like a friend, but it remains a product operated by a corporation seeking revenue.
