Wayve Robotaxis Begin Paid Rides in London

Anime & AI News

Londoners can now request rides in Wayve self-driving vehicles through the Uber app, marking the first time autonomous taxis have been offered for hire in the city. Only 15 vehicles are initially licensed, and each still carries a licensed human safety driver who can take control when necessary. Transport for London approved the modified vehicles as private hire cars, while fully driverless operation requires a separate regulatory process. Wayve says its AI Driver technology learns driving behavior rather than relying on the detailed mapping approach used by some rivals. The company plans to move toward manufacturer-produced Nissan Leaf robotaxis as its technology and safety case mature. Uber and Wayve describe the launch as an important step toward wider autonomous mobility services in London and eventually across Europe.
