🛡️ Vigil of Iron

The tavern had long since quieted. Just a few of the regulars remained. The fire crackled low, casting flickering shadows across the stone walls and worn wooden beams. In the far corner stood the old suit of armor, as usual, weathered, silent, unmoving, yet never forgotten.

Locals called it The Sentinel. No one knew its true name, only that it had stood there for generations, hands resting on the hilt of a sword whose edge had dulled with time. Children dared each other to touch it. Drunkards toasted it. And the barkeep, old Marlen, swore it watched over the tavern like a ghost bound by duty.

One stormy night, a traveler arrived, hooded, soaked, and silent. He stared at the armor for a long time, then whispered, “Still waiting, aren’t you?”

Marlen paused mid-polish of a mug. “You know it?”

The traveler nodded. “My grandfather told me stories. He said the knight made a vow to protect the realm until the king returned. But the king never did. So he stayed. Even after death.”

The tavern fell silent. The fire hissed. And for a moment, the armor seemed to shimmer with memory.

The traveler placed a silver coin at its feet. “For your watch,” he said, and vanished into the storm.

And the armor remained, unchanged, yet somehow more alive.

Some say it’s just a relic. Others believe it listens. But every soul who enters that tavern feels it: the weight of a promise never broken.
