ใ€‡ Through the Peephole

It was 6:42 a.m. when the knock came. A sharp, deliberate thud, not the kind you ignore. Marisol Alvarez froze mid-step on her way to the kitchen, coffee mug still empty. Her husband, Luis, was already at work, and the kids were upstairs, likely still asleep. She tiptoed to the front door, heart thudding, and peered through the peephole.

A wall of tactical gear filled her view. FBI. Seven agents, armored, gunned and alert, formed a tight wedge on her porch. One held up a badge and ID, angled perfectly toward the lens. No shouting. Just presence.

Marisol opened the door a crack, chain still latched. “Mrs. Alvarez,” the lead agent said calmly, “We have a federal warrant to search the premises. Is your husband home?”

She shook her head, voice caught somewhere between confusion and dread. “He left early. What’s this about?”

The agent didn’t answer. He handed her the warrant, eyes scanning the windows, the street, the neighbor’s dog barking in the distance. Behind him, two agents moved toward the garage, another toward the backyard.

Marisol’s fingers trembled as she unlatched the chain. She had no idea what Luis had done. But the look in the agent’s eyes told her they did. “My children are upstairs asleep in their rooms. Why bring an army to my house? What is happening? Are .. are we safe?”
