It started with the blackout that blanketed the city. Phones died, satellites went silent, and in the stillness came that shimmer, like aurora light condensed into a heartbeat. The next morning, Kaori Nishida woke up and found an exquisite golden wand lying next to her on the pillow. She took some time examining the strange artifact before she went to prepare for the day.
Surprisingly, at breakfast, no one in her family knew anything about the wand. She toyed with it on her way to school, and as she approached the convenience store, she heard someone scream. It seems a customer had fainted and stopped breathing. Someone called emergency services as two others were trying to give CPR. By the time paramedics arrived, it was clear the man was dead.
Suddenly, Kaori’s wand started humming as the unthinkable happened.
The world went bonkers. The dead man started moving and stood up, his eyes rolled backwards. His skin rippled like something underneath was trying to get out. Then he knocked down one of the paramedics and grabbed the other’s neck. His mouth opened like a rift from hell, and ugly maroon tendrils reached out for the choking paramedic’s face as if it was sucking his soul.
Everyone, including Kaori, was terrified. Then time seemed to stand still. The wand was now vibrating and shimmering, and its star cast a light onto the girl. Kaori felt her chest tighten, and panic set in. Her wand spun away from her, leaving trails of pastel hearts and starbursts. Then, graceful ribbons of light poured out, wrapping around her, dissolving her uniform into radiance as she levitated.
Her hair lifted as though carried by unseen tides. Petals of light bloomed from her wand, circling her like an orbiting constellation. Her dress reforming from photon dust, white and pink, was layered with translucent frills that shimmered like morning dew. Pink ribbons flared out like wings, tying her hair, forming boots, and dressing up her suit.
When her feet touched the ground again, the glowing wand returned to her hand, time resumed, and every shadow retreated. Her eyes reflected hope, infinite and unyielding. She heard herself whisper an oath: “Kaori Nishida – Let the light bring warmth to our hearts!”
Then, as if on autopilot, she pointed the wand at the abomination. A cone of light burst out, disintegrating the darkness, leaving behind a corpse, two battered paramedics, and a bewildered audience. She pointed her wand at the paramedics, and their wounds began to heal. She instinctively knew that there was nothing she could do for the dead person.
Meanwhile, a dark rift opened at a corner, tearing through the store, and out poured a squad of ugly demonic creatures, hurling insults in an unknown language. The group split apart to make way for a human male with jet-black, wavy hair, wearing a full leather suit covered in chains, studs, and spikes, and a crimson full-face mask that exposed two fiery eyes. He stepped out, stating in clear English:
“Now what do we have here? Some magical hero wannabe? You dare mess with the Abyss?”
He looked at his monsters and yelled: “Junkies tear everyone and everything apart! Leave the blonde bitch to me.”
As the demons approached to attack everyone present. A fireball burst through one of the windows, falling right in front of them, stopping them in their tracks. It was followed by a flicker of fire landing on a counter.
A magical girl appeared from the flames. Her suit resembled Kaori’s, but it was red-orange, just like her fiery twin tails. Her sweat evaporated before it formed, the air around her humming with residual heat distortion. “Mina Takahara – As evil burns, I will burn brighter till it stops moving!”
One of the water dispensers suddenly burst, flooding the adjacent area. The liquid rippled and expanded upwards, taking the form of a human figure. It morphed into another magical girl dressed in a blue suit.
She channeled power, creating waves out of the condensation beads that formed across her shoulders and dripped from her sleeves. The entire scene felt medical, sterile, as if her suit was a containment for something volatile inside her. “Aria Fujimoto – I will wash away pain and freeze all evil!”
Then the ground next to Aria cracked, lapping in some of the water, and a green roll sprang upwards, growing and morphing yet into another magical girl. Olive-green hair and exosuit reinforced with what resembled veins of moss. She wove green waves of moss particles, and patches of foliage sprouted wherever she touched. “Sayo Morimoto – Evil cannot run! My roots will hold it down!β
Mina’s hand burst into flame.
Aria channeled a huge water wave.
Sayo streamed a ripple of moss.
Kaori stepped forward, empowering them with light.
On this day, four ordinary girls were chosen and caught up in something too big to explain. They could sense something feeding on the city’s lifeforce, and only they were equipped to stop it. So they stood together, facing unparalleled evil, saving each other and saving us, one day at a time.
