The ridge had no name on the survey map, just a contour line draped across a pale slope like a half-forgotten sigh. Ruri liked places like this. Blank spaces meant possibility. Nagi walked a few steps ahead, tapping the rock face with a small pick. Yōko followed behind with the GPS, muttering readings as she swiped away tiny black gnats.

Ruri crouched low as something caught her eye. A faint glint inside a narrow fracture in the host rock. It wasn’t quartz. It wasn’t any of the usual glittering distractions. She leaned closer. The color was wrong. Too red. Too metallic. Too alive. “Nagi, Nagi, come look! I found something, is it a ruby?” she called, jumping and clapping with excitement.

Nagi knelt beside her, brushing away dust with her brush. The crystals were unusually well-formed, each face sharp, each edge reflecting a low internal glow pulsing from a few fractures along the surface. Their submetallic luster, deep crimson, the sort of red that could swallow a flashlight beam, made them unmistakable. “Cuprite,” she said quietly. “That shouldn’t be here.”

Young Ruri showed a hint of disappointment: “Oh! What’s that? Is it valuable?” Yōko stepped in, eyebrows lifted. “Copper-secondary mineral. You only really see it when old oxidized ore is close to the surface. Which means…” “Which means this ridge wasn’t always a ridge,” Nagi finished. “This used to be part of a deposit. Let’s look for more”

Ruri felt a ripple through her chest as they swept the leaves, finding more clusters. It was not just the thrill of a discovery. Something slower, heavier, older. As if the mountain itself had stirred. They followed the trail uphill, finding scattered signs: a rusted nail lodged in shale, an unnatural flatness beneath layers of leaf-fall, a section of tailings half reclaimed by moss.

And then, behind a curtain of overgrown bamboo, Yōko spotted a dark rectangle cut into the hillside. No signage. No fencing. Just an aperture in the rock, large enough for a person, swallowed by its own shadow. “Nagi,” she whispered, “this is a mine entrance. And it is unmarked on any of our maps.”

Nagi nodded slowly. “Unregistered. Abandoned before the safety laws. Probably early Meiji or late Edo. Copper, judging by the cuprite.” Ruri touched the weathered timbers of the entrance. They creaked under the weight of years. Moist, cool air drifted out from within, carrying the faint tang of oxidized metal and stillness.

Yōko flicked her flashlight on, the beam swallowed by the corridor ahead. “We shouldn’t go deep,” she said. “Just enough to document the site.” Ruri agreed, but she couldn’t pull her eyes from the interior. It felt like standing at the boundary of two histories, the human one and the mineral one, folded together in the dark.

She raised her own light, illuminating the first few meters of the tunnel. On the left wall, half-hidden beneath soot and mineral bloom, someone long ago had carved a single character into the stone – 銅 – copper. It felt like an invitation. Nagi stepped beside her. “We’ll map the entrance,” she said gently, sensing her hesitation. “If it’s stable enough, we come back prepared.”

Ruri exhaled, letting the thrill settle. She nodded. Yōko started collecting samples. Outside, the cuprite still glowed faintly in the midday light, a red spark waiting at the threshold. Once more, she wondered how many other forgotten stories slept beneath mountains, waiting for someone curious enough to uncover them.
