πŸ›Ž The Shift

The brass fixtures caught the last of the evening light, casting soft reflections across the marble floor. Mina adjusted her cap with a practised flick, checked the alignment of her jacket buttons, and stepped into position beside the luggage cart. Her posture was straight, her gloves spotless. She’d been on shift since noon, but you wouldn’t know it.

A couple approached the desk, business casual, tired eyes, the kind that had been on three flights and one delay. Mina caught the concierge’s glance and moved. No rush. Just right.

“Welcome,” she said, voice warm but clipped. “May I assist with your luggage?”

The man nodded, distracted. The woman offered a tight smile. Mina took the bags, two roller cases, one garment bag and loaded them with care. She didn’t speak again until they were ready to follow.

“Room 804. Elevator’s just ahead.”

They walked in silence. Mina kept a half-step ahead, scanning for obstacles, timing her pace to match theirs. At the elevator, she pressed the button and waited. The woman finally spoke.

“You’ve got a good rhythm,” she said.

Mina nodded. “It’s part of the job.”

The elevator dinged. Inside, the man checked his phone. The woman watched Mina.

“Do you ever get bored?”

Mina looked at her, then at the mirrored panel behind her own reflection. “No,” she said. “Every guest is different. Every shift has its own tempo.”

The doors opened. Mina led them to the room, unlocked it with a keycard she’d prepped at the desk, and held the door open. The man walked in without a word. The woman lingered.

“You’re very precise,” she said.

Mina smiled, just slightly. “It’s a quiet kind of hospitality.”

The woman nodded, then followed her partner inside.
