❄️ Stillness in the Wind

That morning, the wind had teeth, sharp, dry, and whispering across the tundra like a memory too old to name. Beneath the pale sky, where clouds drifted like worn linen, an Arctic hare sat motionless. Its fur, thick and white as frostbitten quartz, blended seamlessly with the snowfield, save for the black tips of its ears, flicking once, then still.

It had been a lean winter. The grasses that clung to the earth in brittle tufts offered little, and the predators had grown bold. A fox had passed through two nights ago, its scent lingering like smoke. The hare had waited, heart thudding beneath its ribs, until the silence returned. Now, it watched patiently.

The mountains in the distance were older than the hare’s lineage, older than the stories the wind carried. They stood like sentinels, their flanks carved by time and ice. The hare did not know their names, only that they marked the edge of its world. Beyond them lay things it would never see, forests, rivers, perhaps even warmth.

But here, in the frozen basin, life was measured in stillness. A single twitch could mean survival or death. The hare’s breath misted faintly, barely disturbing the air. It listened for the crunch of snow, the wingbeat of a snowy owl, the distant crack of ice shifting beneath the sun. Suddenly, there was movement!

A gust lifted a veil of powder, revealing a patch of sedge. The hare moved, slow and deliberate, hind legs propelling it forward in a practiced rhythm. It reached the grass, nibbled once, twice. Enough to keep the fire inside burning. Above, the clouds parted briefly, and light spilled across the tundra. The hare paused, ears erect, eyes wide. It was more an instinctive ritual than fear.

In the Arctic, every breath was a vow to endure, to vanish, to return.
