๐ง Snow Globe
The snow globe had been sitting on the windowsill since the first frost. It had become a ritual for Maren to turn each morning before the kettle whistled. Inside, three penguins stood on a sculpted ice shelf. Two adults flanking a chick, all rendered with surprising realism. The chick’s downy texture, the adults’ yellow markings, even the faint suggestion of wind-carved snow, it was miniature craftsmanship at its finest.
Maren had found it at a flea market in ลปabbar, tucked between chipped porcelain and a box of tangled cords. The vendor didn’t know where it came from, only that it “looked expensive,” but it wasn’t. It felt intentionally precise. The snow inside was suspended, not meant to fall unless invited. She’d turn the globe gently, watching the flakes swirl around the penguins like a sudden squall. The chick always looked up, as if surprised by the weather.
One morning, while the kettle hissed and the curtains glowed with winter light, Maren noticed something new. A tiny crack in the base, hairline, but definite. She ran her thumb over it. No splintering, no leak. Still, it felt like the globe had aged overnight. She almost panicked. She moved it to the center of the table, on a folded cloth, away from the window’s temperature swings. She lost track of time as she examined it more closely.
Weeks passed. The crack didn’t grow. But the snow inside began to settle in different ways. Not clumped, not broken, just slower. More deliberate. The chick’s gaze seemed to shift, too, angling toward the adult on the left. Maren knew it was impossible. But she also knew how long she’d stared at it and how many mornings she’d marked by its presence. She considered contacting an acquaintance who restored antiques.
One evening, she invited the friend over to discuss the issue. He examined the globe by lamplight, nodding at the craftsmanship and the clarity of the glass. “It’s not old, but it is most certainly a fine piece of work,” he said. “I cannot find the crack, though. You are not insane, though. There is something odd indeed about it. It feels like it was crafted to know where it wants to be. How curious!”
