🧦 The Fourth Stocking

The fire crackled low, casting flickers of gold across the stone hearth. Four stockings hung from the mantel. Aki’s green one with the snowflake, Yuki’s candy-striped red, Sora’s cream with the stitched tree, and the plain red one, still waiting. The wreath above swayed gently in the draft, its bow catching the light like a wink.

Sora was the first to stir, tiptoeing in socked feet past the sleeping dog and the half-eaten cookie plate. He crouched by the fire, inspecting the stockings like a detective. “No lumps,” he whispered. “No bulges. Suspicious.”

Yuki followed, clutching a mug of cocoa like a sacred relic. “They’re empty. That’s the point. It’s not midnight yet.”

Aki emerged last, dragging a blanket like a cape. “Technically, it’s past midnight. Perhaps it is because the new stocking is still unclaimed.”

They gathered around the fireplace, three siblings in a triangle of warmth and anticipation. The fourth stocking was still unlabeled after it mysteriously appeared in the lineup without explanation. No one had asked their parents, and it turned into a guessing game.

“Could be for the dog,” Yuki offered.

“He already got a chew bone,” Sora said. “And a sweater.”

“Maybe it’s for Mom,” Aki said. “She’s been sneaky lately.”

“What about Daddy?” countered Yuki.

They paused. The fire hissed. The wreath swayed again.

“No,” Sora said finally. “It’s for whoever figures it out.”

They continued discussing until an acceptable rule took shape. They would handcraft something, and the fourth stocking would belong to the one who earned it. They scattered like mice, each returning with something small: a pinecone carefully wrapped in ribbon, a folded red paper crane, and a scribbled note cut as a star that read “For whoever needs it most.”

They placed their offerings inside the red stocking, one by one. No winner was declared. Just the quiet satisfaction of a new tradition invented. In the morning, all the stockings were full. The fourth one contained a tin of SmartSweets, a wrapped mug, and a note in unfamiliar handwriting: “Nice try.”

When they unwrapped the mug, it turned out to be a cream ceramic with a maroon print on its side. The image portrayed a cute little bear carrying a bucket full of flowers, with a speech bubble declaring “We are having a baby!”
