π Silent Night
The living room glowed like a hearth itself, every surface touched by the soft shimmer of Christmas lights. The tree stood tall in the corner, its branches heavy with golden ornaments, pinecones, and a ribbon that curled like smoke. A strand of golden beads looped lazily around the trunk, catching the firelight from the hearth across the room.
The stockings hung above the flames, slightly askew from the dog’s earlier inspection, and the garland above them twinkled with tiny LEDs that blinked in slow rhythm. Cynthia adjusted the last ornament, a glass bauble etched with snowflakes and stepped back. Her fingers were still cold from the attic crawl, but the warmth of the fire was beginning to reach her toes.
She glanced at the window, where the reflection of the tree shimmered against the night. Outside, the street was quiet, the kind of hush that only came when everyone was home, and no one was rushing.
“Lights on the timer?” her hubby called from the kitchen, where he was wrestling with a tray of cookies.
“Set,” she replied. “They’ll fade out at midnight.”
He emerged with flour on his cheek and a grin that matched the season. “You remembered the soft bokeh setting?”
Cynthia nodded. “Warm white, slow pulse. No seizure-inducing flicker this year.”
They both laughed. Last year’s lights had been a disaster, more like a nightclub rather than seasonal decor. They were so bright and fast that they invaded their neighbours’ living rooms. This year, everything was deliberate. The glow was gentle, the reflections subtle. Even the wreath above the mantel had been fitted with a dimmable strand, its holly leaves casting soft shadows on the wall.
They sat down on the rug, mugs of mulled wine in hand, and watched the lights dance. The dog curled between them, tail thumping once before settling. Cynthia reached for the remote and dimmed the overheads until only the tree, the fire, and the garlands remained. She pointed at the gramophone, and Bocelli’s A Family Christmas resumed playing.
“This is it,” she said quietly. “This is the ambience I wanted.”
Paul nodded, pulling her into a comfy embrace, eyes on the tree. “It’s not just the lights. It’s the way they land.”
The room held its breath as the couple kissed, then exhaled in warmth.
