28 Years Later, Perfect Blue Will Hit Theaters In 4K

GKIDS has announced that it will screen a new 4K restoration of Satoshi Kon’s landmark psychological thriller, Perfect Blue, in U.S. theaters starting October 3rd, 2025. Produced by Madhouse with a screenplay by Sadayuki Murai, the film initially premiered at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal in 1997, before its Japanese release in 1998. GKIDS previously brought Perfect Blue to theaters in 2018 and released a Blu-ray with Shout! Factory in 2019. Based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s 1991 novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, the story follows pop idol Mima Kirigoe’s unsettling shift to acting, as she grapples with identity, a stalker, and a series of murders. Blurring the line between reality and hallucination, the film remains one of anime’s most acclaimed psychological works, now revitalized for new audiences.
