Google Keeps Chrome But Its Search Monopoly is Illegal

A federal judge ruled that Google’s search monopoly is illegal but spared the company from being forced to break up its Chrome browser or Android OS. Judge Amit Mehta instead barred Google from exclusive search contracts across Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant, and Gemini, while allowing non-exclusive default deals. Google must also share some search index and user-interaction data with rivals, though less than the DOJ sought. Alphabet shares rose more than 6% after the ruling. The six-year order can be paused during the appeal process. Google vowed to challenge the decision, warning of potential privacy risks. At the same time, the DOJ hailed the ruling as opening the previously frozen search market and preventing Google from monopolizing the emerging generative AI sector.
