🚢 The River Ghost

The barge moved slowly, like a memory drifting through time. Its hull, weathered and silent, carried more than cargo. It bore the weight of stories long forgotten.

On the eastern bank, where the trees leaned in like curious spectators, old Tomas sat with his fishing rod and thermos of tea. He’d watched this river since boyhood, back when the smokestacks first pierced the sky and the water ran thick with industry. Back then, the barges were loud, proud symbols of progress. Now they glided like ghosts.

This one was different.

It had no markings and no visible crew but just a long, covered body and a quiet hum that seemed to echo from beneath the surface. Tomas squinted. Something about it stirred a memory. One of his father’s tales of a barge that once vanished in a storm, carrying a shipment meant to change the fate of the region. Machinery, blueprints, maybe even something more… dangerous.

As the barge passed, the water shimmered strangely. Tomas felt a shiver run down his spine with a splah of reverence. The kind reserved for relics that defy time.

He stood and tipped his cap.

The barge didn’t slow. It didn’t need to. The river knew it. The trees remembered it. And Tomas, for the first time in years, believed in ghosts again.
