Microsoft Introduces "Agent Mode" in Office Apps

Microsoft has introduced “Agent Mode” in Office apps, extending Copilot’s capabilities to Word, Excel, and soon PowerPoint. The new feature, described as “vibe working,” allows users to issue natural language commands such as “analyze this sales data and make it visual,” after which the AI generates formulas, graphs, and polished reports. Similar to Microsoft’s earlier Deep Research and Researcher tools, Agent Mode automates study and formatting tasks, turning raw information into structured, professional material. Microsoft also confirmed that Anthropic’s Claude chatbot will coexist with OpenAI’s GPT in the Office suite, enabling editing and creation of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files entirely by prompt. Agent Mode launches today for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Personal, and Family subscribers on the web, with desktop rollout coming soon.
