Admitting GPT‑5 backlash, Altman's vision now includes buying Chrome

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted GPT-5’s rollout was mishandled, with users complaining the model felt buggy, impersonal, and “corporate.” Though API traffic surged and user numbers grew, backlash forced OpenAI to restore GPT-4o behind a $20 paywall, sparking criticism of monetization tactics. Altman also acknowledged GPU shortages and the staggering energy demands of GPT-5, while promising trillions in future data center spending. At the same time, he floated bold new ambitions, from launching a “beautiful” device designed with Jony Ive to building an AI-driven social media platform. Most strikingly, Altman suggested OpenAI might consider buying Google Chrome if antitrust rulings force a sale. The remarks highlight OpenAI’s growing pressure to balance innovation, profitability, and public trust.
