Australia Nixes AI Copyright Loophole, Backs Creators
Anime & AI News

The Albanese Government has reaffirmed its support for Australian creators as it prepares for future AI-related copyright challenges. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland announced that Australia will not introduce a Text and Data Mining Exception, which would have allowed AI developers to use copyrighted works for training freely. Instead, the government will explore balanced solutions through the Copyright and AI Reference Group (CAIRG), focusing on three key areas: establishing fair licensing avenues for AI use of copyrighted material, clarifying how copyright applies to AI-generated works, and improving affordable enforcement through a small-claims system. The initiative aims to protect creators while enabling responsible AI innovation that benefits Australia’s creative and media industries.
