AWS Project Rainier Powers Anthropicβs Claude At Million-Chip Scale
Anime & AI News
Amazon Web Services launched a massive new AI computing cluster, Project Rainier, to support Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude. The infrastructure, spread across multiple U.S. data centers, incorporates nearly 500,000 of Amazon’s custom Trainium2 chips. Anthropic, which Amazon backs, will scale up to use over one million Trainium2 chips on AWS by the end of 2025. Amazon said the Rainier cluster will also power future versions of Claude. The initiative reflects major cloud providers’ race to expand computing capacity for advanced AI models. Project Rainier began in 2024, and Amazon’s announcement highlights its commitment to meet surging demand for AI infrastructure. Rainier’s deployment is part of Amazon’s broader plan to use its own AI chips to deliver massive compute capacity for cloud customers.
