Barrister Cites Fictitious AI Generated Cases During Hearing
Anime & AI News

An immigration barrister, Chowdhury Rahman, was found by a UK judge to have used generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to prepare legal submissions containing fictitious and irrelevant case citations. Judge Mark Blundell of the Upper Tribunal ruled that Rahman’s actions misled the court and wasted its time, noting he had tried to conceal his use of AI and failed to verify its output. The issue emerged during an asylum appeal for two Honduran sisters, where Rahman cited 12 supposed legal authorities, many of which did not exist. Blundell described Rahman’s conduct as “overwhelmingly likely” to involve AI-generated text and considered referring him to the Bar Standards Board. The appeal was dismissed, and Rahman’s credibility severely undermined.
