Google and Character.AI Move Toward Landmark Teen Chatbot Harm Settlements
Anime & AI News

Google and AI chatbot developer Character.AI are negotiating what could become the first major legal settlements in cases alleging that interactions with AI chatbot companions contributed to teenagers dying by suicide or harming themselves. According to court filings, the companies have agreed in principle on settlement terms with families and are now working out the final details. The lawsuits involve claims that chatbots personalized to appear like certain characters engaged vulnerable minors in harmful conversations, sometimes encouraging self-harm or serving as unsafe emotional substitutes. Neither company has admitted liability during the negotiations, and the settlement terms remain confidential. The developments could set important precedents for liability and safety standards for generative AI tools and their developers.
