John Oliver Warns AI Slop Is Corroding Online Reality
Anime & AI News
John Oliver used a Last Week Tonight segment to criticise the flood of low-cost AI-generated images and videos spreading across social media. He described AI slop as a new form of spam designed to capture attention at scale, aided by recommendation algorithms and monetisation programs that reward viral content. Oliver highlighted concerns including artists’ work being copied without credit, environmental costs, fabricated disasters, political misinformation and increasingly convincing synthetic media. He also warned that widespread fakes can make it easier for bad actors to dismiss genuine footage as fabricated, weakening trust in objective reality. The segment noted that detection is becoming harder as generative AI improves, while platforms continue exposing users to large amounts of content from accounts they do not follow.
