Netflix’s Yu Yu Hakusho Hailed One of the Best Live-Actions Ever

Anime & AI News

Netflix’s December 2023 live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho has been hailed as one of the best anime-to-live-action efforts to date. The five-episode series, starring Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke Urameshi, captured the spirit of Yoshihiro Togashi’s 1990s manga with faithful casting, detailed costumes, and atmospheric set design. Its standout achievement lies in the fight scenes, which combine martial arts choreography, strong visual effects, and convincing make-up to replicate the anime’s energy more authentically than most adaptations. However, condensing 66 anime episodes into under five hours left pacing issues, and the omission of the pivotal Dark Tournament arc was a major flaw. Despite its brevity and structural missteps, Yu Yu Hakusho stands alongside One Piece and Alice in Borderland as Netflix’s strongest live-action anime adaptations.
