U.S. Data-Center Construction Hits Record Amid AI Build-Out

Construction spending on U.S. data centers hit a record $40 billion annualized rate in June 2025, Bank of America Institute reported, citing Census Bureau data. This marks a 30% year-over-year increase, following a 50% surge in 2024, primarily driven by booming demand for generative AI and machine learning. Tech giants, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, continue to invest billions in scaling infrastructure to support AI workloads, benefiting semiconductor firms like Nvidia, which dominates GPU sales for data centers. While hyperscalers account for much of this surge, Bank of America economists noted rising U.S. electricity demand will also stem from electric vehicles, heating, industrial reshoring, and building electrification through 2030. AI remains a core driver reshaping the nation’s energy and infrastructure landscape.
