ποΈ Shift’s End
The sun dipped low behind the rig, casting long shadows across the steel decks. Mateo wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his glove, the salt air clinging to his skin like a second layer. He’d been working twelve-hour shifts for the past three weeks. From maintenance and inspections to the occasional emergency fix when the hydraulics acted up.
He wasn’t supposed to be here this long. The rotation was meant to be ten days on, ten off. But weather delays and a sick crew member had stretched the schedule. Mateo didn’t complain. He liked the rhythm of the rig: the hum of machinery, the clank of boots on metal, the quiet camaraderie of men and women who knew how to keep things running.
Tonight, though, something felt different.
He climbed to the top deck after dinner, a habit he’d picked up from an old supervisor who swore the view could reset your brain. The sky was a canvas of gold and violet, clouds scattered like brushstrokes. Below, the ocean was calm, almost glassy. The cranes stood still, and the helipad was empty, waiting for tomorrow’s chopper.
Mateo lit a cigarette, even though he’d promised his wife he’d quit. He thought about her and their daughter back in Paola, probably finishing homework or watching cartoons. He’d missed her birthday last week. Sent a video message, sang off-key, tried to make her laugh.
He exhaled slowly, watching the smoke curl into the wind.
“One more week,” he whispered. “Then I’m home.”
The rig creaked gently beneath him, a reminder that even giants moved with the tide. Mateo stayed until the sun disappeared completely, then headed back down, boots echoing in the quiet.
Tomorrow would be another long day. But for now, the world was still.
