🥔Potatoes

Liena adjusted her straw hat as the late afternoon sun warmed the cobblestones beneath her sandals. The burlap sack was heavier than she expected, filled with potatoes freshly dug from her grandfather’s garden. She didn’t mind the weight. It was the kind of ache that meant she was useful.

This part of Dingli was quiet, save for the distant hum of a motorbike and the soft clinking of dishes from an open kitchen window. She passed the old church, its dome catching the light like a polished stone, and waved to Mr. Camilleri, who sat outside the café sipping his usual espresso.

“Helping Nannu again?” he called.

Liena nodded. “He says the soil’s too stubborn for his knees.”

Mr. Camilleri chuckled. “You’re stronger than you look.”

She smiled, but didn’t stop. Her grandfather was waiting, and she knew he’d want to sort the potatoes before dinner. He always said the small ones were best for roasting, the middle ones for soup, the big ones for jackets, and the odd-shaped ones for stories. Like the one that was shaped like a heart that he swore brought her grandmother luck the day they met.

As she reached the garden gate, Liena paused. The air smelled of earth and rosemary. She looked down at the sack, then up at the house where her grandfather stood in the doorway, wiping his hands on a towel.

“Good haul?” he asked.

“Very,” she said. “And one shaped like a rabbit.”

He laughed. “Then we’ll have stew and a story.”

And just like that, the day folded into evening; simple, warm, and full of quiet meaning.
