🐓 The Rooster’s Warning

The wind had teeth that morning.

Marta stood at the edge of her grandmother’s attic, staring out the small, round window that framed the weather vane like a painting. The rooster, cast iron, proud, and rusting at the edges, pointed east, its arrow stiff against the gusts. The sky behind it churned with bruised clouds, light bleeding through in streaks like old oil on water.

She hadn’t been back to the village in years. Not since Nanna passed. But the house had waited, stubborn and unchanged, like the rooster atop its roof. Her father used to say the vane was cursed and that it never spun unless something was coming. Marta had laughed at that as a child. Now, she wasn’t so sure.

The attic smelled of dust and dried lavender. She found the old trunk beneath the eaves, the one with the brass latch and faded initials: “G.R.” – Giovanni Rizzo, her grandfather. Inside were bundles of letters, yellowed and tied with twine. One envelope sat loose on top, addressed to her in a shaky hand.

“If you’re reading this, the rooster has turned. You must go to the orchard before the storm.”

No signature. Just the message.

Marta hesitated. The orchard had been abandoned for decades, ever since the fire. But something in the air felt off, felt charged, like the moment before a fuse blows. She grabbed her coat and stepped outside.

The rooster hadn’t moved. Still pointing east.

She followed its gaze down the cobbled path, past the chapel, past the stone well with the cracked lid. The orchard lay beyond the ridge, tangled and forgotten. But as she reached the gate, she saw it: a figure, hunched beneath the old fig tree. Not ghostly. Not imagined. Real.

It was her uncle Pietro. Missing for twelve years.

He looked up, eyes hollow but alive. “You came,” he whispered. “The rooster told you.”
