The axe thunked into the stump with a finality that echoed through the trees. Mason wiped his brow, breath fogging in the cold air, and stepped back to admire the pile of split logs. Enough for the night. Maybe enough for the morning too, if the frost didn’t bite too hard.
The fire crackled inside the metal ring, flames licking the stacked wood with greedy tongues. He dropped into the folding chair, boots outstretched, and reached for the tin cups balanced on the cooler to make some instant coffee.
The bitter smell cut through the woodsmoke and cold air, luring Dani from the canvas tent, tugging her jacket tighter. She tossed a glance at the duffel bag by the entrance, then at Mason. “You didn’t forget the marshmallows this time, did you?”
He smirked. “Check the side pocket.”
She rummaged, triumphant a moment later. “You’re learning.”
“Survival skills,” he said, handing her a hot cup. “Adapt or perish.”
The forest pressed in around them, tall pines silhouetted against a sky smeared with stars. No cell signal. No hum of traffic. Just the occasional rustle of wind through branches and the steady rhythm of firewood settling into embers.
Dani skewered a marshmallow and held it over the flames. “You ever think about staying out here longer?”
“Like a week?”
“Like a season.”
Mason watched the firelight dance across her face. “You’d go full cabin mode?”
She shrugged. “We’ve got the gear. Tent’s solid. Food’s packed, else we hunt and forage. You split wood like a lumberjack. What else do we need?”
He considered the cooler, the axe, the firewood, and the quiet. “A better coffee setup.”
She laughed, the sound sharp and clean in the night air. “Dealbreaker?”
“Close.”
The marshmallow caught flame. Dani blew it out and popped it into her mouth, chewing thoughtfully. “We could do it. Just for a while. See what it’s like to wake up with the sun and sleep when it sets.”
Mason leaned forward, feeding another log to the fire. Sparks rose like fireflies. “Let’s try three nights first. If we don’t kill each other, we’ll talk seasons.”
She nodded, settling into the other chair. “Three nights. Starting now.”
