First AI Actor, Tilly Norwood, Debuts at Zurich Film Festival

Anime & AI News

The world’s first AI actor, named Tilly Norwood, has debuted at the Zurich Film Festival, sparking both industry curiosity and intense backlash. Created by Dutch filmmaker Eline Van der Velden through her company, Particle 6 Productions, and its AI talent studio, Xicoia, Tilly has already drawn interest from Hollywood talent agencies. However, many human actors voiced anger on social media, criticizing the ethics of generating an artificial performer instead of hiring real women. Actress Melissa Barrera called it “gross” and urged agents to “read the room,” while Mara Wilson highlighted the disregard for real performers’ opportunities. Van der Velden defended Tilly as “not a replacement,” but rather a “creative work, a piece of art,” designed to provoke discussion. The debate highlights Hollywood’s growing unease with the role of AI in the entertainment industry.
