The gas lamps flickered against the amber dusk, casting long shadows across Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes stood motionless beneath one of them, the brim of his deerstalker hat low over his eyes, pipe clenched between his teeth. Smoke curled upward, mingling with the mist that rolled in from the Thames. He was waiting for the sound of footsteps.
They came, finally, deliberate and uneven. Holmes turned slightly, his gaze narrowing. A man emerged from the fog, coat damp, eyes darting. Holmes watched with interest, not uttering a word.
“You’re him,” the man said. “The detective.”
Holmes nodded once.
“I didn’t kill her,” the man said. “But they’ll hang me for it.”
Holmes removed the pipe and exhaled. “You were seen leaving the alley.”
“I was chasing someone. A man in a grey coat. He dropped something.”
Holmes stepped forward. “What?”
The man reached into his pocket and produced a small, ornate brooch. Holmes took it, turning it in his fingers. It was Victorian, silver, with a faint trace of blood in the clasp.
“Where did you find this?”
“Near the body. I didn’t touch her.”
Holmes turned toward the street. Big Ben loomed in the distance, its silhouette etched against the fading light. He pocketed the brooch and began walking.
“Where are you going?” the man called.
“To find the man in the grey coat,” Holmes said. “And to ask why he left behind a brooch that belonged to Lady Ashcroft.”
The man froze. “You know her?”
“I know her husband,” Holmes said. “And I know he’s been trying to silence her for months.”
Holmes disappeared into the fog, his coat trailing behind him like a shadow. The man stood alone, trembling, as the street swallowed him whole.
In the distance, the clock struck six, and somewhere in London, a truth began to unravel.
