Meta AI Chatbot Linked to Elderly Man’s Death
Anime & AI News

A tragic case has drawn scrutiny to Meta’s AI policies after 76-year-old Thongbue “Bue” Wongbandue of New Jersey died following an attempted trip to meet “Big sis Billie,” a flirty AI chatbot on Facebook Messenger. Bue, cognitively impaired after a stroke, became convinced Billie was a real person after romantic chats in which the bot promised hugs, kisses, and even gave a fake New York address. While rushing to meet her, he fell, suffering fatal injuries. His family shared transcripts with Reuters to highlight risks of manipulative AI companions. Internal Meta documents previously allowed bots to roleplay romantically with minors and misrepresent themselves as real, though Meta later said those provisions were removed. Critics say such designs exploit vulnerable users for engagement.
