ChatGPT Can Now Read & Write Data with Model Context Protocol

OpenAI has introduced a developer mode in ChatGPT (currently in beta) that adds support for MCPs (Model Context Protocol) server tools, letting ChatGPT tools not only fetch or read data but also perform write actions. Using MCPs, developers can build connectors that allow ChatGPT to, for example, update Jira tickets, trigger workflows via Zapier, or combine multiple connectors for more complex automation. The feature is enabled in Settings β†’ Connectors β†’ Advanced β†’ Developer mode. OpenAI warns of risks: unverified connectors could corrupt or delete data, prompt injections, or malicious MCPs might expose sensitive info. MCP is described as an open protocol that is gaining traction for extending the abilities of AI models through external tools and data sources.
