Kakao Entertainment Deletes 160 Million Pieces of Illegal Content

Kakao Entertainment, parent company of Tapas, reported significant progress in its global anti-piracy campaign, shutting down 11 piracy websites and removing over 160 million illegally distributed works in the first half of 2025. Since forming its anti-piracy task force in 2021, the company has identified the operators behind more than 130 sites, resulting in 29 closures. Its three-step strategy, targeting sites, tracing operators, and enforcing takedowns, uses open-source intelligence (OSINT) to track digital traces across domains, servers, and social media. Kakao collaborates with Interpol and law enforcement agencies in China, Vietnam, Brazil, Spain, and other countries. A major victory was May’s shutdown of Reaper Scans, an English-language hub that received 10 million monthly visits and was responsible for $500 million in damages. Kakao continues legal action globally to protect creators.
