OpenAI Will Not Make Anime Sex Bots

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has drawn a clear ethical line in the growing debate over AI relationships, stating that while some companies will create “Japanese anime sex bots,” OpenAI will never pursue that path. Speaking with The Verge, Altman acknowledged parasocial attachments to AI, noting that a “small percentage” of users cannot distinguish reality from role-play. He stressed that AI should not exploit individuals with mental health issues, even as demand grows for bots as companions. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has taken the opposite view, predicting AI will evolve into lifelong “friends.” Altman, however, expressed unease about users relying on ChatGPT for significant decisions, warning society must carefully balance usefulness with risks as AI relationships become increasingly normalized.
