YouTube Implements AI Age Verification System

YouTube has started rolling out an AI-powered age verification system designed to protect teens on its platform better. The tool uses machine learning to infer whether a user is under or over 18 based on signals such as video searches, viewing categories, and account history, rather than relying solely on self-reported birthdays. If flagged as a teen, safeguards like disabled personalized ads, digital wellbeing tools, and restricted recommendations will automatically apply. Users mistakenly identified as under 18 can verify their age with a credit card or government ID. Initially launching in the U.S., the system will expand globally if successful. YouTube says the move reinforces its focus on child safety, building on past features like supervised accounts.
