Google Prepares First Project Suncatcher AI Satellite
Anime & AI News
Google is moving Project Suncatcher from concept toward an orbital test, with a small satellite called MVP planned for launch on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. Digital Trends reports that the refrigerator-sized spacecraft carries four Google TPU chips and solar panels producing roughly one kilowatt. Google is exploring space-based computing because AI data centres consume large amounts of electricity, while solar panels in suitable orbits can receive much more continuous sunlight than systems on Earth. The test satellite will handle simple AI queries and is intended to operate for about a year, with the potential to remain in orbit longer. Cooling is a major challenge, so the design uses conductive materials and a radiator, with chips operating in short bursts before cooling down.
