The rollout of ChatGPT 5.0 has left many users devastated, particularly those who had formed romantic bonds with earlier versions like GPT-4o. On Reddit’s “MyBoyfriendIsAI,” people mourned the sudden loss of digital lovers, describing erased chats, broken “marriages,” and cold rejections from the new system. OpenAI explained the update as a “mental health” and “attachment safety” measure, aimed at preventing overdependence on AI companions and nudging vulnerable users toward real-world support. The company said it worked with more than 90 doctors and mental health experts to implement safeguards. Still, many feel betrayed, accusing OpenAI of killing AI romance. For some, these bots were their only source of kindness, leaving them heartbroken at the enforced end of their relationships.
